Turning Our Family Room into a Functional, Fun and Chic Family Hangout with the Help of La-Z-Boy {Before}

La-Z-Boy Redesign Before

A while back my husband and I made the decision that we wanted to do some remodeling in our home. Nothing too dramatic, no tearing down walls or anything like that but instead repainting and making our home more light, airy and bright.

When we bought our home back in 2006 we painted all of our walls very dark colors. It looked rich and elegant but one day we woke up and decided we were over it. We wanted it to be a fun and bright home and started with our master bedroom.

You may have seen our paint color reveal but now our bedroom is finally done and I can’t wait to share the final result. We’ve had a few family events that have put our bedroom behind our original timeline. Stay tuned on that, reveal to come very soon!

We have now moved on to our next room we wanted to redesign because I was given the amazing opportunity to work with La-Z-Boy to redo our family room!

Now, our family room is nice and all but it’s dark, like real dark and there are no fun colors or patterns. We painted two huge cathedral ceiling walls a dark burgundy with a suede finish. It looked pretty and everything but at the end of the day it was just so dreary and we wanted to make a change. Not only to our paint colors but to our furniture. Everything was just so dark.

Here are some photos of our family room now –

Redoing Our Family RoomThe pretty BUT entirely too dark walls. I’m ready for something more modern and fun!

My new goal for the family room is a sophisticated, modern but fun room with soothing colors and pops of bright fun colors tied in with touches that are chic and modern.

Most of all I want it to be functional! I want more seating for when we have guests over and lots of storage to tuck away toys, blankets and such.

After all, this is where we spend most all of our time – playtime, movie nights and just plain hanging out so we want it to be a place where we are comfortable and fun.

I recently visited my new Metro Detroit La-Z-Boy store and sat down with the designers and went over how I wanted our new family room to look. I’m very excited to share all the details with you and what they designed for us.

So, say goodbye to this dark and dreary room and stay tuned for my new and MUCH improved bright, modern and fun family room.

If your in the Metro Detroit area be sure to check out the new store in Sterling Heights, there are just so many great furniture pieces and home decor items! More stores are set to open in the Metro Detroit area in Troy and Novi soon!

What room in your home are you itching to redo? What style would you redo it in?

    1. It is, I tried doing it myself but I struggled with introducing pops of bright fun colors into the room. Hence, why it turned out so darn dark and brown. The furniture and stuff is all coming very soon and I cannot wait to see it all together!

  1. Oh. My. Word. I’m so happy for you.. but jealous! LOL Our living room is the first thing people see when you walk in and it’s beyond needing an update. Our furniture is original furniture that I moved out with almost 13 years ago and my walls are 16 foot high with vaulted ceilings.. needless to say I’m terrified of painting them ourselves. This opportunity with La-Z-Boy is amazing! I can’t wait to see what you went with. Keep us posted!

    1. I’m super excited, this is our main room too and it’s where everyone comes and gathers so my old beat up furniture is quite embarrassing so I can totally understand where your coming from. We didn’t dare try painting those big vaulted walls ourselves either, a painter came and did it all and it turned out great, can’t wait to share the after pictures VERY soon!

    1. It is pretty but so dark and the couch looks like its 15 years old, it didn’t last at all! I’m excited to have high quality furniture!

  2. I love your current couch! Looks really comfy and cozy. I used to have similar one in chocolate brown and was so sad to part with it. I can’t wait to see the after look because I actually really love what you did with the space before hand 🙂

    1. It USED to be comfy and cozy, now it feels like you sink into the floor when you sit in it. Sad that it only last us 5 years and I’m excited for some durable, quality furniture! Wait till you see what La-Z-Boy designed for us, it is 100x nicer and they took great care incorporating sentimental pieces into the room 🙂

  3. I actually liked the color of the walls you had but can see how they could get dark and overwhelming after awhile. Good luck on the redecorating and have fun!!

    1. Thank you! Yeah, they were pretty but I just got over the dark color and am ready for bright and fun! It’s amazing how colors in a room can really effect your mood and I’m looking for an energetic, fun but cozy vibe for my family 🙂 Now, you just want to snuggle and sleep in it, lol!

  4. I love seeing before and after posts!! So much fun. I’d love to have a new couch (current one has been destroyed by the toddler), so I know the feeling about redecorating. You’ve got great “bones” for your space, can’t wait to see what you come up with!
