Help! My One Year Old Climbs Everything, What Do I Do?!

one year old climbing

My house has become a jungle gym! Loo Loo has been walking now since she was 9 months old. So, as you can imagine, at 12 months she is a pro. She mastered walking, moved on to running and now she’s onto the next big thing…. climbing!

For her, its the ultimate excitement. For me, it causes a lot of worry and stress.

‘ll never forget the first time she climbed on my favorite chair in the corner of the room using a tupperware container that she cleverly used as a step stool and made her way up to the chair. I glanced up from what I was doing and she was beaming at me, like “hey ma, look what I just did! Isn’t this awesome?” Yes, yes it is hun but really I’m thinking NOOOOO this is so not awesome. Not awesome at all.

Here she is working her way up into the chair with her sister –

Here is a quick shot I got of the girls after Loo Loo got in the chair, sorry it’s blurry I was in a rush to get a cute pic before she decided standing on the chair was a better idea.

But, just look at how happy and proud she is about it.

Pinky NEVER did any of this stuff. She was just happy sitting on the floor playing with her toys, but, Loo Loo needs a constant eye on her now. Climbing has become her absolute favorite past time.

We’ve made so many adjustments to the room but this little stinker always finds the next thing she can scale. This kid is either destined for mountain climbing or she’s gonna be a gymnast.

So, most of our furniture has moved out of our main hangout area BUT there are however two pieces of furniture we can’t get rid of. The couches. and it makes me incredibly nervous that she’s going to fall off of them the wrong way one of these days.

Of course, as her mom, I’m very proud she’s smart as a whip and can whip up her own staircase to the side table using a toy, tupperware or whatever is in her reach. But, man oh man is it stressful! Thankfully, we’ve not had any bad accidents (knock on wood!!!!!) and just a few bruises here and there.

I’ve tried telling her no, telling her honey we sit on chairs and sitting her down and even try redirecting her attention but she’s so determined she’ll go right back to it ten fold.

Have you had any experience with their young toddler climbing? How did you teach them to be safe at such a young age and what did you do to prevent them from climbing things?

    1. Thankfully we have our Stainmaster carpet in here with the nice thick padding plus an area rug that is super soft, it definitely helps and I’m super glad we don’t have all wood floors!

  1. I feel your pain- my daughter did the same thing! Fortunately, while she learned to climb up, she also learned to climb down pretty quickly. (I’m guessing your daughter will do the same.) Before she was fully safe climbing down, though, we had pillows on the floor all over the place. Not too pretty, but it kept her from having a major accident for those moments when we weren’t right next to her! Good luck!

    1. Ohh, I hope she does learn quick! I keep trying to show her but she so far hasn’t done it on her own. She took a tumble today but I was thankfully right in arms reach to catch her. Pillows is a great idea and I’ve already put them on the floor 🙂 Thanks!

  2. We have had issues like this and with onee of my grandchildren, I went to visit them and went into their room and caught my grandson as he decided to climb his dresser where the tv was. Talk about being scared. It was such a good thing I went in there because I saw the entire dresser starting to tip and had to run to grab it or dresser and tv would have been on top of him. Scared me so bad. My daughters friend had a twin that did this but unfortunately, their tv came down on him and he lost his life.. Still makes me sick thinking of this. Good luck Mom! Just make sure no tv’s are on a dresser

    1. Oh man, that is terrible about your daughters friend. I’m so sorry to hear that. It scares me so much seeing her climb like that and something like that happening. We have a tv above our dresser but we used a SANUS TV mount to prevent this from happening.
