A Mom’s Review of the 2011 Honda Odyssey

Honda Odyssey Touring Elite Exterior

Honda Odyssey Touring Elite ExteriorFor the past week I switched out my ride and put my car in the garage to try out a 2011 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite! Upon my first glance of the Honda Odyssey I loved the simple and sophisticated style and sleek chrome accents. The Odyssey I drove and pictured is in Dark Cherry Pearl, I really loved the color it’s a very deep red and sparkles! While I like the styling of the Odyssey, what had me at hello is all the perfect mom and family friendly features it’s packed with in the interior. But first lets start with my favorite exterior features. The rear sliding doors and automatic trunk all have a pinch-free function, meaning if your little one happens to stick their little hands and fingers into the path of the closing doors, it will automatically retract and prevent your child from being pinched or getting the door slammed on them. Speaking of the doors and trunk, all of them can be controlled from the vans interior and the key fob with the touch of a button freeing your hands and preventing you from having to get in and out of the car once your in the drivers seat.

I took the Honda Odyssey on many errands with Baby Digger and getting in and out was super easy and efficient. Plus, it has TONS of trunk space plus fold and go seating. All of the 3rd row seating can be folded down to carry larger trunk loads and you can fold down the middle row for when you send your husband to grab even larger loads. šŸ™‚ The seats are super easy to fold down with the magic stow and go seating, you just need to pull on the strap and the seat releases and folds itself down, I’m only 5’1″ and small framed and stowing the seats was still very easy for me.

Honda Odyssey Touring Elite Backup Camera
Multi View Back-up Camera

One of my favorite features is the multi-view back-up camera. When the van is in reverse the entire center screen shows a camera view of what is behind you along with the direct path of the vans rear. It has 3 settings – normal view, wide angle view and a top down view – so you can see every angle behind you. The yellow bars showing you the path of the van helped me out a lot when in tight parking areas guiding me out of the parking space without hitting any other vehicles. Plus, it will beep if you come close to a person, object or another vehicle. I just love having this kind of reassurance, especially since I’m short and turning my head and looking isn’t always as effective as I’d like. It also has a sensor in the front and will warn you if an object is approaching with a beep and message in the information panel.

The Honda Odyssey Touring Elite has great climate control features allowing the driver and passengers even in the rear of the van, to each have different settings. Perfect for my husband and I because I’m always cold and he’s always hot. Speaking of keeping cool, it has a cool box which keeps bottles and drinks or even snacks nice and cool on the go.

The rear passenger seats have built-in UV screens to block out the sun and protect from UV rays and there are tons of cup holders. It’s the perfect vehicle for family road trips with its HD wide-screen monitor. Pop in a DVD or hook up the gaming system and viola, hours of entertainment for the kids. The Odyssey also has a built-in hard drive for storing music, whats better is if you put a CD in it automatically stores the CD onto the hard drive so no more having to switch CDs in and out! The hard drive can also store photos so when the screen isn’t being used as a GPS or assisting backups you can use it to display a favorite family photo! Notice the Mommy Digger logo on the screen that they loaded up on to it for me šŸ™‚

Now, lets put this review into motion (yep, pun intended)! The Odyssey has a nice smooth, quiet ride and it handles very nicely. I put it to the test multiple times handling corners especially on the double roundabouts we have in our neighborhood and it handled them with ease every time. I could switch lanes with confidence with its blind spot information system, showing a warning light next the the side view mirror if a vehicle is located within the Odyssey’s blind spots. Hitting someone that is in my blindspot has always a been big fear of mine and this feature gave me great peace of mind.

The navigation system was really nice and easy to use. Putting in a destination address is very easy using a knob instead of having to try and reach over and type it into a touch screen or even better use the hands-free voice recognition with Honda’s new Song by VoiceĀ® feature which can also control the hands-free Bluetooth system. The list of features in the Honda Odyssey Touring Elite is quite impressive and in my opinion it’s a great family vehicle, packed with family-friendly features! If you are in the market for a new vehicle or just thinking about it I would highly recommend taking a Honda Odyssey for a whirl. From its safety and comfort to its fun entertainment features it makes for a wonderful family vehicle, plus it gets pretty good gas mileage (19 city / 28 hwy mpg) but I was getting 21.8 mpg city.

  1. Although I do like my 2012 Odyssey, be aware that the sensor on the sliding doors is not perfect and does not prevent the door from closing on little fingers or hands. My 2 year old had the door close on his entire hand this weekend. Then the door wouldn’t open right away because it has to fully latch and takes a second before you can get it open again. When your child’s hand is in the door you don’t have time to spare…so we yanked it open, it broke the door motor, $1,350 repair. Honda doesn’t want to cover it. Apparently the auto reverse doesn’t work during the locking stage. Fingers are ok, just not a satisfied Honda owner anymore šŸ™

    1. Oh no! šŸ™ I’m so sorry that happened to your son, how awful! I would further a complaint to Honda corporate and make your voice heard and get them to cover the expense repairs and the doctors bill!
