There are few harder jobs than being a mom. Most moms are so busy taking care of everyone else, they tend to neglect themselves. Here are five things that every mom should do daily to keep her health and her sanity.
Appreciate Your Children
Your children are likely the reason you are tired, overwhelmed, and stressed. It’s easy to think about all the negatives in your life when you are feeling overwhelmed when you are focused on providing for them all day every day. Take a moment every day to appreciate the beautiful creatures you’ve made. Laugh with them over something silly, hug them, take a minute to listen.
Eat Fruits and Vegetables
It’s easy to neglect your health when you’re tired and don’t feel like cooking. No matter what, make sure you eat fruits and vegetables every day. Don’t fall into the habit of eating your kid’s mac and cheese instead of a nutritious meal. Throw some spinach into a smoothie or set out fresh fruit to snack on. Not only is it good for your health, but you also set a good example for your children.
Incorporate Some Type of Exercise
It’s hard to exercise when you’re a busy mom, but the benefits are worth making the time. Besides keeping your heart healthy and helping you maintain a healthy body weight, you also get those feel-good endorphins every mom needs. If you really feel like you don’t have time to exercise daily, just get outside and walk briskly for 15 minutes to get your heart rate up. Exercising every day lowers your blood pressure, improves sleep, and helps combat lethargy.
If childcare is the issue, consider joining a gym or the YMCA with a child watch program. You could also find activities to do outside with your kids like playing catch, going for a walk, or riding bikes together as a family. You get the benefits of exercise and the bonus of spending time with your kids.
Spend a Minute (or Two) With Your Spouse
It’s common that your relationship with your spouse gets sidelined when you have kids. Every mom should set aside a little time with her spouse every day to maintain that relationship. Divorce rates are surprisingly high when couples become empty-nesters because they’ve been focusing on their kids instead of each other for 18 years. Make your relationship with your spouse a priority every day even if it’s just for a few minutes.
Do Something For You
By the end of each day, make sure you’ve done something for yourself. Busy moms don’t have time to make grand gestures every day, but you can always find a way to do something small. Buy yourself Starbucks or watch your favorite TV show. Pick up a small bouquet of flowers at the grocery store or ignore the laundry for a day. To keep your sanity in a busy home, you’ve got to take care of yourself even if it’s just by doing something small.
It’s not easy adding one more person to take care of, but it’s important for a mom to put herself first every once in awhile. A mom who takes care of herself is in better shape to provide the care her family needs and deserves.
